It’s that time of year again one of the best rugby tournament is about to get under way this Friday. The best of the best put on their home nation jersey and fight together.

The current champions are Ireland but will they be dethroned that will be the biggest question considering they are the best team at the moment and no team has been able to beat them. They have beaten the All Blacks twice and are in contention for the World Cup title.

I know a lot of people probably don’t know the format for the six nations so here goes I will explain the rules, teams and trophies that are awarded.

The teams that are competing are;

  • Ireland- Defending Six Nations and Grand Slam winners they have 3 Grand Slam wins. Have 12 Triple Crown titles
  • Wales- Have 11 Grand Slam titles and 26 Six Nation Titles. 20 Triple Crown titles
  • England- Have 13 Grand Slam titles and 28 Six Nation Titles they have won the Triple Crown 25 times
  • Scotland- Have not won the Six Nations but have won 10 Triple Crown Titles before six nations started. 
  • Italy- Haven’t won any Six Nations or Grand Slams 
  • France- Have won Six Nations 3 times 

The format for Six Nations are;

  • The six teams will face each other once 
  • If one nation wins  they get 4 points and if they nation scores 4 or more tries they get bonus point. 
  • If the nation loses then they get no points only if they score more that 4 tries they receive 1 losing point or if they are defeated by less that 7 points.
  • If the nations draw both will get two points and if they score 4 or more tries they will get extra bonus point.
  • Who gets the most points at the end is the winner of the Six Nations 
  • The nation that comes last at the end will get the Wooden Spoon title 

The Trophies; 

  • Six Nation Trophy- is given to the team that comes first in the table at the end of the championship. 
  • Triple Crown Trophy- The nation that wins three Six Nation matches in a row will receive this trophy. 
  • Grand Slam Trophy- Is award to the nation that wins every Six Nation match.
  • Calcutta Cup Trophy- This trophy is only awarded when England play Scotland and who wins gets the trophy.
  • Millennium Trophy- This trophy is only awarded when Ireland play England who wins gets the trophy.
  • Doggy Weir Trophy- This trophy is only awarded when Wales play Scotland who wins gets the trophy.
  • Giuseppe Garlbuldl Trophy- This trophy is only awarded when France play France who wins get thee trophy.
